Announcing our 2019 Creative Connections Resident!
The Caselberg Trust is pleased to announce our Creative Connections Resident 2019 will be Wellington based artist Bridget Reweti.
Bridget is an artist from Ngāti Ranginui and Ngāi Te Rangi in Tauranga Moana. Her lens-based practice practice explores landscape perspectives and contemporary indigenous realities. She is part of Mata Aho Collective, a collaboration between four Māori women artists who produce large scale textile works, commenting on the complexity of Māori lives. She is also member of the Kava Club, a Wellington based collective of Māori and Pacific artists, performers, activists and supporters.
Bridget holds a Masters in Māori Visual Arts from Toioho ki Āpiti, Massey University and a Postgraduate Diploma in Museum and Heritage Studies from Victoria University of Wellington. Bridget has held numerous residencies both nationally and internationally and her work is held in both private and public collections. Mata Aho Collective are currently exhibiting in Oceania at the Royal Academy London, and in 2019 at the Honolulu Biennale Hawai’i. In 2019 Bridget will be holding a solo exhibition at the Pah Homestead Auckland.
Bridget’s Creative Connections Residency project in Dunedin is titled “A Conversation between two harbours” and will be focused on exploring the possibilities to develop a conversation between two harbours – the Otago harbour, and her home Tauranga Moana.
About this project, Bridget says: “I am interested in what the conversation between two harbours would be like. How does the harbour where I am from in Tauranga Moana converse with the Otago Harbour?”
Bridget will undertake the project through her lens-based social practice, and expects that the conversation will develop from kaupapa Māori research into the cultural, environmental and social understanding of both the Otago and Tauranga Harbours.
Bridget adds: “I am interested in a multiplicity of narratives, resisting a homogenised view of relationships with natural resources by instead exploring differing perspectives, understandings and experiences.”
The 3-month-long Caselberg Trust Creative Connections Residency is targets projects that make links across a variety of creative media, and professional disciplines, and/or to communities relevant to the planned project. Previous Creative Connections Residents have been: Megan Jane Campbell (2012), Pacific Underground (2013), Alex Taylor (2015), Becky Cameron (2016), Victoria McIntosh (2017), and Justin Spiers (2018).
The Caselberg Trust purchased the Broad Bay, Dunedin home of the late John and Anna Caselberg in 2006, with the aim of hosting creative residencies in the house. Since inception, the Trust has held a variety of creative projects and events, as well as hosting a number of well-known New Zealand writers and artists at the cottage.
